Unemployment Benefits: Three Ways It Hurts Your Career
Snelling Staffing - The Wyckoff Group reports that collecting unemployment benefits may impact your long-term career goals.
EATONTOWN, NJ, February 19, 2011 /Human Resources PR News/ -- According to Congressional Law, individuals can receive unemployment benefits for 99 weeks as well as extra money for dependents. Between the ability to collect benefits for almost two years and the saved costs of job-related expenses such as childcare and commuting, many people are turning down job offers and electing to remain unemployed. Snelling Staffing - The Wyckoff Group, headquartered in Eatontown, NJ, reports that while collecting unemployment benefits may appear to be a quick fix, it may do long-term damage to your career goals.
"Unfortunately, many candidates are refusing work because they believe they profit more from unemployment," says Frank Wyckoff, President of Snelling Staffing - The Wyckoff Group. "Because of Congressional Law, there's an initial appearance of truth to this line of thinking. However, job-seekers are overlooking the impact unemployment has financially and professionally."
Wyckoff states that going back to work sooner rather than later will be a better decision for candidates in the long run. Therefore, he says to applicants that even if an available position isn't your "dream job", you should remember the following three factors before turning down any offers:
• You Can't Get a Raise on Unemployment - Many people don't return to work because they're offered a position with lower compensation than they were expecting. While it may seem like a good idea to remain on unemployment in the short-term, the monthly money you collect on unemployment is never going to increase. Returning back to work gives you the opportunity to prove your worth and build up your salary.
• You Can't Get Promoted on Unemployment - Initially connecting with a company is difficult to do in today's economy. If you're offered a position that you're qualified for with a good organization, take it to get your foot in the door. Even if you're looking for full-time work and you're offered a part-time position, you can take the job to supplement your income while building relationships with important company contacts. If you perform strongly and demonstrate to management that you're a versatile, hard-working team player, you may have the opportunity to move up to your desired role.
• You Can't Strengthen Your Resume on Unemployment - At some point, the unemployment benefits are going to run out. The longer you wait, the longer the employment gap on your resume. Going back to work on even a temporary basis demonstrates to potential employers that you take work and your professional goals seriously.
"Stop looking for a job and began looking for an opportunity," adds Wyckoff. "Prove yourself and your employer will make sure you're not underemployed."
