New York Civil Rights Violation Lawyer Supports Judge's Decision Not to Dismiss Civil Rights Lawsuit Against the NYPD

Judge Shira Scheindlin signaled the seriousness with which the court takes the allegations that NYPD's stop-and-frisk tactics disproportionately and illegally target minorities.

The lawsuit alleged that NYPD officers use race as a basis for stopping and frisking citizens, rather than legitimate non-racial factors like reasonable suspicion. Specifically, the lawsuit asserted that the NYPD purposefully concentrated its stop-and-frisk activity on blacks and Hispanics.

"As Judge Scheindlin has shown in her rejection of the city's request for dismissal, New Yorkers deserve more transparency and accountability in regards to allegations of NYPD racial profiling and discrimination in New York," civil rights violation lawyer Perecman said.

In the past, police officers have claimed that minorities were stopped more often because the person fit the description of a suspect, reported The New York Times.

The lawsuit also accused the New York Police Department of pressuring officers to meet quotas and punishing them if they do not. This allegation is believed to be fueling the NYPD's discrimination against blacks and Hispanics.

The Police Department said it has a training program that goes over arrest procedure and warns officers against racial profiling. However, Judge Scheindlin noted that numerous officers did not recall ever receiving such training, reported The New York Times.
